In 20 years, I have never once read the truth anywhere, and yet when I tell you, it will seem so obvious that you&#8217;ll wonder why you haven&#8217;t heard it before.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"19653\" class=\"card ill parent\" data-l=\"2\" data-seq=\"7\" data-tm=\"1446528125\" data-type=\"c_hypothetical\">The metaphor<\/h2>\n<div id=\"19632\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"12\" data-tm=\"1446528125\" data-type=\"c_text\">\n<p>You hear some rustling outside, so naturally you step out of your\u00a0tent and into the African savannah. You are surrounded\u00a0by hundreds of miles of knee to waist-high grass interspersed with prickly Acacia trees and Baobab trees. As the dust settles, and the intense sun rays shine through, you realize, a pride of felines circles your position.<\/p>\n<p>The lioness is the predator, and you are the prey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"19654\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"14\" data-tm=\"1446528239\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>The matriarch\u00a0weighs well over 200 pounds, her roar is heard almost 5 miles away, and as she holds up her 1.5 inch claws, she also brandishes 2.5 inch teeth.<\/p>\n<p>The lioness is the predator, and you are the prey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"19657\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"19\" data-tm=\"1446528721\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<h3>The anxiety<\/h3>\n<p>Your autonomous nervous system takes control over your body. Hello adrenaline. Your heart and breathing rate accelerate instantly. Your digestive system immediately shuts down, your mouth becomes dry and your eyes dilate. All of that blood is quickly redirected to your muscles. Your face flushes with blood, and your muscles begin to shake in preparation for your next move. Your bladder relaxes, your hearing dissipates, and tunnel vision sets in.<\/p>\n<p>You have almost no control over it. It&#8217;s automatic.\u00a0Before you know it you are either fighting the lion, or running away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"19656\" class=\"card parent ill\" data-l=\"2\" data-seq=\"24\" data-tm=\"1446528218\" data-type=\"c_analogy\" data-tech=\"\">The Reality<\/h3>\n<div id=\"19655\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"29\" data-tm=\"1446528936\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-94 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/michaelspeaks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/mic-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" \/>Except you are not actually in the African Savannah. You have not stepped out of your tent into a pride of lions, you have stepped up on stage in front of a proud audience, hungry for what you have to feed them.<\/p>\n<p>The audience is the predator, and you feel like prey.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"19628\" class=\"card story parent\" data-l=\"1\" data-seq=\"34\" data-tm=\"1446528218\" data-type=\"c_refute\">Conventional advice doesn&#8217;t work<\/h2>\n<p>What advice have you heard to remedy the fear? I don&#8217;t care how much you search the internet, you&#8217;re going to find\u00a0the same old advice:<\/p>\n<div id=\"19647\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"44\" data-tm=\"1446529398\" data-type=\"c_text\">\n<ul>\n<li>Take deep breaths<\/li>\n<li>Practice<\/li>\n<li>Think positive<\/li>\n<li>Your audience wants you to succeed<\/li>\n<li>Exercise<\/li>\n<li>Relax<\/li>\n<li>Slow Down<\/li>\n<li>Meditate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We could go on and on. My point is this: everything I have ever read on this subject is total baloney!<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I exaggerate a little. This advice is not <em>totally<\/em> worthless. Conventional advice can lesson some of the symptoms temporarily; it just does nothing to cure the disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"19658\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"46\" data-tm=\"1446529398\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<h3>Do you know what it feels like?<\/h3>\n<p>The first time I spoke in public, an<a href=\"http:\/\/michaelspeaks.com\/blog\/welcome\">\u00a0anxiety attack<\/a>\u00a0almost sent me into a life hiding from the spotlight. Real anxiety can affect you before, during, and even for hours after you speak.\u00a0If you are a person who actually knows what it feels like, you know that a few breathing exercises don&#8217;t make it go away.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s almost like all those people giving advice, don&#8217;t actually know what it really feels like for you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"19641\" class=\"card ill parent\" data-l=\"2\" data-seq=\"49\" data-tm=\"1446528229\" data-type=\"c_hypothetical\">Does it work?<\/h3>\n<div id=\"19648\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"54\" data-tm=\"1446529864\" data-type=\"c_text\">\n<p>Are breathing exercises really going to help when the lion queen\u00a0pounces?<\/p>\n<p>Is slowing down going to help you get away?<\/p>\n<p>Are positive affirmations going to magically scare the lioness backwards?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NO!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"19659\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"56\" data-tm=\"1446529864\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>If conventional advice wouldn&#8217;t work in front of a pride of real lions, why on earth would anyone expect it to work in front\u00a0of a proud audience?<\/p>\n<p>Your physical problem is the same. The physical symptoms are the same. The biological reaction is the same.\u00a0Why should your solutions be different?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"19660\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"57\" data-tm=\"1446529864\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>They wouldn&#8217;t! All of that advice is wrong!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"19635\" class=\"card story parent\" data-l=\"1\" data-seq=\"59\" data-tm=\"1446528218\" data-type=\"c_prob\">You Blend In<\/h3>\n<div id=\"19649\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"4\" data-seq=\"74\" data-tm=\"1446530738\" data-type=\"c_text\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michaelspeaks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Two_caged_lions_at_the_Los_Angeles_Zoo_ca.1920_CHS-9745-e1446533533777.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-95\" src=\"http:\/\/michaelspeaks.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Two_caged_lions_at_the_Los_Angeles_Zoo_ca.1920_CHS-9745-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"Two_caged_lions_at_the_Los_Angeles_Zoo,_ca.1920_(CHS-9745)\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a>When you&#8217;re behind the bars, or behind the glass at the zoo, you&#8217;re in control. Behind the glass, you can easily blend in with the make-shift savannah. \u00a0You can easily\u00a0blend in with other zoo patrons. You can easily\u00a0blend in with the lions&#8211;as if it&#8217;s normal for you both to be in close proximity.<\/p>\n<h3>You Stand out<\/h3>\n<p>But when\u00a0there is the slightest crack in the glass, you suddenly stand out. Suddenly, when the glass breaks, you feel like the center of attention. The lioness becomes the predator and you become the prey. You stand out.<\/p>\n<h2>The problem<\/h2>\n<p>This\u00a0is the problem: You can&#8217;t stand out and blend in at the same time. When you&#8217;re facing a pride of hungry lions, you want to blend in, but when the glass breaks you have to stand out! And you can&#8217;t blend in and stand out at the same time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"19663\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"4\" data-seq=\"101\" data-tm=\"1446530997\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>Do you remember the last time you felt those nerves?\u00a0What did you do?<\/p>\n<p>You tried to take deep breaths. You tried to slow down. You tried to relax. You tried to do exactly what they tell you to do. ALL of that advice is designed to help you blend in, to help you feel more comfortable, and to help you feel like you belong.<\/p>\n<p>It might work for a little while. If you succeed at blending in with the Savannah, you may feel slightly more relaxed, temporarily. But masking the symptoms will never eradicate the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Your feeling like you blend in doesn&#8217;t change the fact that the lion sees you standing out.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"19662\" class=\"card txt\" style=\"position: relative; opacity: 1; z-index: 0; visibility: visible;\" data-l=\"4\" data-seq=\"102\" data-tm=\"1446530997\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>If the problem is broken glass, the solution is not breathing exercises. If the problem is broken glass, the solution is to replace the glass.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"19630\" class=\"card story parent\" data-l=\"1\" data-seq=\"104\" data-tm=\"1446530738\" data-type=\"c_sol\">You must stand out<\/h2>\n<div id=\"19664\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"111\" data-tm=\"1446531336\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>You cannot stand out and blend in at the same time.<br \/>\nYou have to choose one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"19645\" class=\"card ill parent\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"114\" data-tm=\"1446530738\" data-type=\"c_personal\">Option 1: Refuse to speak<\/h3>\n<div id=\"19651\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"4\" data-seq=\"119\" data-tm=\"1446531336\" data-type=\"c_text\">\n<p>If you insist on blending in, staying one of the crowd, and not making any waves, then you can only avoid the anxiety by rejecting the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I spoke in public my anxiety attack was so bad that I replayed the experience in my mind for days. I second guessed myself constantly and swore silently to myself for months &#8220;If anyone ever asks me to speak in public again, I&#8217;m going to say no!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 id=\"19639\" class=\"card story parent\" data-l=\"2\" data-seq=\"124\" data-tm=\"1446530738\" data-type=\"c_enum\">Option 2: Embrace the spotlight<\/h3>\n<div id=\"19652\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"4\" data-seq=\"134\" data-tm=\"1446531475\" data-type=\"c_text\">\n<p>Then I realized there was another alternative. I realized that at some points in life, you get thrust into the spotlight whether you like it or not.<\/p>\n<p>Someday the glass will break, and you will stand out. When you&#8217;re already on stage, it&#8217;s too late. When you are the speaker, you always stand out.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t stand out and blend in at the same time,\u00a0and you have no choice but to stand out, then it&#8217;s a waste of time to try\u00a0blending in.<\/p>\n<p>The only choice to avoid the anxiety is to embrace the spotlight. I decided to learn\u00a0to <strong>stand out on purpose<\/strong>. Because of that decision, my speaking career was born, and my greatest weakness has been transformed into my most passionate strength.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"19665\" class=\"card ill parent\" data-l=\"3\" data-seq=\"136\" data-tm=\"1446531528\" data-type=\"c_explanation\">How to survive a lion attack<\/h2>\n<div id=\"19666\" class=\"card txt\" data-l=\"4\" data-seq=\"137\" data-tm=\"1446531643\" data-type=\"c_text\" data-tech=\"\">\n<p>By the way, do you know what you&#8217;re supposed to do when threatened by a lion in real life?<\/p>\n<p>You embrace the spotlight. You stand out. The experts say you stand up tall, you wave your arms. You make yourself look bigger, taller, stronger, louder.
